I think I can attempt to answer that based on my observations over the years. It was the porn industry that majorly influenced the evolution of bald kitties. Nothing new there.

In the 60's and 70's women in porn were all natural as we know.
In the 80's, along with porn, there was also the advent of the "string bikini." Women who appeared in porn movies or on the beach at that time often had the string bikini tan lines which required them to shave tightly but not completely. Thus began the "landing strip" which was usually a rectangular or triangular patch of hair.
In the 90's the landing strips got progressively smaller and smaller until public hair pretty much disappeared completely off the porn grid. (For men as well as women).
The girls I knew in high school had full bushes and never even talked about or considered shaving there. Legs, armpits - sure, but no girl I knew wanted a razor going near there. I think the advent of the Bic Disposable 2-bladed and flexible head razor made the job easier.
Old school razors back in the day without flexible heads were for legs and men's gruff faces only.
So the culprits are Porn and Disposable razors, just my opinion.

By the way, I am a full-bush advocate. That was my first 2 dozen experiences.

I just got back from the RW and I didn't run across any bush. Mostly, very trimmed to shaved.
