This part. I've said more than once that I live in a neighborhood that, according to the stats, is a "bad neighborhood". My point was, my being "white" hasn't impacted me living here. I'm not a target for the crime because I simply don't get involved in activities that make me a target. 80% or more of the people of color who are killed by other people of color-- tend to be engaged in criminal enterprise. Most folk aren't randomly running around and shooting people for sport. There is a good bit of gun violence in my neighborhood... we generally don't go a month without someone being shot within a 10 block radius.
I don't have a tall fence around my property. I have a regular chain link fence in my backyard for my doggos, but that's it. I have cameras on the property and I have an alarm system, along with a couple of personal weapons in the event someone were to try to come into my home-- but it hasn't been an issue. I was broken into twice when I lived in a "nicer, white neighborhood".... by the heroin junkies that were rampant on that side of town. Here? Kids want to help carry in my groceries if they see me.
People have this perception that predominantly black, high crime areas are just these war zones where walking to your car will get you shot. This isn't the movies. If you don't go looking for trouble, you're generally not going to find trouble.
OEB-- my stats above come from the FBI crime data tables. You'll have to do the math to get the percentages... but statistically speaking most white people are killed by whites.. and most black people are killed by blacks. The issue with the black people being killed by police are when we're talking about unarmed people.. or situations where the person killed didn't "have" to be killed to preserve the life of the officer. Some cases that the movement grabs onto-- aren't as striking as others.
