Trust me, you don't want to do that. I have some personal insight. Now it wasn't from traveling there of course, because that's illegal.
Things that you'd want to buy aren't really that cheap. If you want decent food, toilet paper, tampons for your date, decent toothpaste, hot water, air conditioning, etc., you're going to have to pay up, in dollars. Yeah doctors make the equivalent of $40 per month, but they're paid in pesos, and you can't use those in dollar stores that have decent quality foodstuffs and personal items, or in paladares (private restaurants) that have decent quality food. As to a place to stay, based on what it costs a tourist to rent a house or apartment, you get what you pay for. $25 a night will provide you an unairconditioned dump, probably about the same as what you'd pay for lodging in some crack infested place in the hood in the USA.
If you ever go there stock up on shampoo, feminine napkins and the like. You'll be very popular with the women.
