Problem is we have never received an appropriate replacement word. My black neighbors use it all the time. When there is a shooting, especially one involving children, not uncommon for them to call the perpetrators the “N” word.
They are great people, good neighbors and I would never associate that word with them.


But if I see or read an article about Gwen Berry, Maxine Waters, Whoopi Goldberg, Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama or Oprah, it’s the first word that enters my mind.

I don’t associate the n slur with race but with culture and attitude, although members of certain races may be more inclined to fit the description. This is right in line with democratic icon Robert Kleagle Byrd’s thinking.
