Kennedy may have slowed it down but with Reagan and the big business boom it would have ended for this country in the same place as it is now. Greed is good!
My main point is Kennedy had his heart in the right place during some crucial times. Cuban Missile Crisis, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam ect. If "Operation Northwoods" would have been carried out as planned America most likely would have entered into a serious conflict with Cuba but Kennedy had the sense to make sure that didn't happen. Do you think George Bush, Obama, Trump and Biden have the Common Sense Kennedy had?

JFK called it correctly in teh Cuban missile crisis. Multiple factors helped avert nuclear war.

Bay of Pigs - NO - he promised support to Cuban revolutionaries - and chickened out.

Viet nam - was a disaster - intervening in a countries' war for independence from France, across long supply lines - in a foreign country where One could not tell friend from foe.

DPST /LBJ/McNamara and top brass micro-manipulation and failure to wage a war to win - doomed teh American effort
Viet Nam war was a waste of American resources and Men.

We should never have been there
The 'domino theory" - is false.

Not really. But for a Soviet Submarine officer, Vasili Arkhipov, the Cuban Blockade would have turned hot... and likely nuclear based on the US ROE.

Kennedy got lucky... and in turn so did the US and the world.

The Bay of Pigs incident was a great embarrassment to Kennedy and he took full responsibility, but the plan changed without his knowledge and it was a total failure. That's when he had a meltdown with the CIA. Kennedy resisted going into Vietnam and for good reason, advisers in Southeast Asia reported to Kennedy that is was a no win situation and America should not send Troops to Vietnam. As it turned out that was good advice and Kennedy took it. Unfortunately after Kennedy's Assassination LBJ ignored the warnings and of course America involved itself in Vietnam Militarily. For the past Fifty Eight Years America has put itself further in debt and closer to what this Country was never intended to be because our leaders don't know what it means to do the right thing. They would rather destroy than to preserve the country's traditions and way of life.

Kennedy had no choice but to engage in the Vietnam affairs and battles. I believe it was his inaugural address that included "go anywhere, pay any price, bear any burden.....". That was all about stopping communism. Vietnam became the ground where these ideas met, and how far each country, Russia and USA, were willing to go, without a direct confrontation.

The question that can never be answered is, would Kennedy have continued the escalation in Vietnam.

Kennedy got advised correctly that the war was unwinnable, MacNamara stated in The Art of War that he knew that also but changed his position and sided with the higher people in power who wanted to go to war, all to save his then 25,000 a year salary......so he just went along with the war profiteers to keep his fat salary and flush 57,000 plus of our youth down the toilet.

Never understood how a country can legally draft its youth to fight a war that’s not fought in self-defense, forced to fight in some other peoples civil war thousands of miles away, Korea was the same play different decade.....I understand the whole proxy war between us and Russia just politicized all those troops lost....

I wonder about the speech JFK made about leaving countries alone might have set off an impetus for his assassination?

Before Ike Eisenhower left office he warned the country and who ever would be his predecessor of the Military Industrial Complex. Kennedy was suppose to be a Puppet. But instead he did the job as president. He thought about important things such as world peace, Foreign and Domestic Policy, Economy and America's future as a powerful influence on the world stage. But of course his vision for America ended on November 22nd 1963. This country has never been the same since.
