I think your fears of a Russian / Chinese alliance are wildly overplayed. Both want to be the power top, and China isn't going to bend over for Russia like they did as second-fiddle to Stalin and accept the same type of lopsided deals.

I don't think it's all that absurd that Russia's stance of "the Mother country", wants to re-annex the countries that were once part of their empire. To that; how far they want to roll back current status to old status would dictate how far they may go. When a crazy dictator is at the helm of any country- everything and anything is on the table. Who would have thought that Ukraine - would be sitting in the situation they are merely 2 yrs ago. Perhaps there was tensions not publicized prior, but I think it caught the majority of the world off guard. So the point is not that it's shocking they are fighting what russia calls a civil war, but rather, - where will it stop.

Once any group of people or leader shows you what they are capable of, you need to believe that they are ABSOLUTETLY capable of repeating that behavior, and more likely to go to further means to meet their objectives.
