Why the likes of Levi and Salty really believe this bullshit rather than at least admitting it for what it is is beyond me.

Here's why: it's pretty much a cult.
A charismatic "leader" takes advantage of lonesome people who desperately want to think they are unique, promising them that a magnificent day is coming when all their predictions are proven true. All of their adversaries will be rounded up and killed, and all non-believers will come to the believers praying for forgiveness, stunned to find they were wrong all this time.
This whole thing makes these
pathetic folks feel incredibly good — and it feels especially good to people who are lonely and who don't feel like other people think they are intelligent. Qanon and the like tell these dipshits they are fearless, brilliant researchers doing something of incredible importance that is going to change the world, and the rest of the world thinks they are idiots.
If you were them, who would you want to hang around with? Plus, they would lose their entire circle of fellow dipshit friends and probably any family members stupid to hang out with them.
At any rate, it's unfixable without a national intervention to take away smartphones and the internet from these morons.
