If Republican politicians wanted to defuse the situation they could have played down the rhetoric and told everyone to calm down. Instead they played to their base and ginned up the hate instead.

Actually it's not "almost as stupid", it's even stupider.

Giffords wasn't the target of 2 recent assassination attempts, and Palin wasn't a former FBI Director.

Well in the scenario you refer to wouldn’t that make Palin’s use of target iconography stupid as well? Of course not. The stupidity lies with the reactionary hysteria rather than the inciting event.

Just like the liberals went crazy after the Palin incident the conservatives went crazy after the Comey incident.

The only difference that I can see is that one was used during a political campaign and the other was used to sell a book.

PS. Gabby Giffords wasn’t the recipient of two assassination attempts. She was the victim of one where she was shot in the head. While not fatal resulted in significant brain injuries.

And Palin was the Governor of Alaska and a candidate for Vice President.
