I've noticed that a LOT of people ask for 20-50% deposits for first time clients. Not sure what to make of that.

It means pass. That ad sounds like it was written by a guy.
Look through the ads on OH2 and find some that say they are newbie friendly. Pick two of them to get started. Then you will open up the ones that ask for a reference.
