Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said he still believed President Donald Trump was a “fascist” after their Oval Office meeting.

Host Kristen Welker said, “In that press conference with President Trump, a reporter asked you whether you believe that President Trump is in fact a fascist, a word that you’ve used in the past. You were about to answer. Then, President Trump sort of jumped in. And he said, ‘That’s okay. You can just say yes. It’s easier than explaining it.’ So, Mr. Mayor-Elect, just to be very clear, do you think that President Trump is a fascist?”

Mamdani said, “And after President Trump said that, I said, ‘yes,'”

Welker said, “So you do?”

Mamdani said, “That’s something that I’ve said in the past, I say it today. And I think what I appreciated about the conversation that I had with the president was that we were not shy about the places of disagreement about the politics that has brought us to this moment. And we also wanted to focus on what it could look like to deliver on a shared analysis of an affordability crisis for New Yorkers.”

Welker said, “You’ve also said in the past that President Trump has engaged in a, quote, attack on our democracy. You’ve called him a despot. Do you still believe President Trump is a threat to the democracy?”

Mamdani said, “Everything that I’ve said in the past, I continue to believe.”

Wow! What a strange journey it's been. Trump blasting Marjorie and even calling her a "traitor" in a Truth Social post. And then acting like he wants a bromance with Zohran, even giving him a permission slip to call Donald a fascist without repercussions!

It seems like we're living in an upside-down world. Like in 2011, when Mario Draghi took office as president of the ECB. (You know you're living in an upside-down world when the pope is German and the head of Europe's most important central bank is Italian!)

But I do think it makes good sense for Donald to cozy up to Mamdami, especially since "affordability" concerns are at the top of the list of middle-class America's worries these days, and he damn well better convince the electorate that he's doing all he can to address them -- lest Republicans get thoroughly shellacked at the polls in next years' midterms. In furtherance of that endeavor, it's wise for him to express that he wishes to make common cause with Mamdami, if only in very limited areas within which they may agree. Like making the necessities of life more easily obtainable by working-class Americans, whether or not you have a workable plan that's likely to achieve that goal.

Just so no one's offended, the reason I said donkey's mouth instead of horse's mouth is because Trump's a Democrat. And the donkey of course is the Democrats' mascot! Trump doesn't really have much in common with real donkeys. He's less stubborn and more flexible than many.
