It's not as simple as either side (e.g. MSNBC or Newsmax) would have you believe.
Most of the people who entered the Capitol were probably deluded. They believed Trump actually won the election. Trump didn't help when he encouraged people to come to D.C. for a big protest on January 6, and then on the morning of January 6 said to "fight like hell" or "you're not going to have a country anymore." And also asked the crowd to march over to the Capitol.
Was Trump himself deluded? Did he think he won? He's a sucker for self-serving conspiracy theories, which Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Lin Wood, and Mike Lindell dished out in spades.
In other words, most of the trespassers thought (incorrectly) they were performing some kind of patriotic duty, defending American democracy.
To an extent the entry was pre-planned, by members of the Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, and some others. But the majority of the crowd was just following along, and didn't clash with police or destroy property.
The majority, including the Shaman, didn't deserve jail sentences, even though they were dished out to a number of them.
A simple trespass sentence in the U.S. varies by state but often involves a misdemeanor, with penalties typically ranging from fines (e.g., up to $500) to jail time (e.g., up to 180 days or a year) for a first offense, depending on aggravating factors like entering a home or using a weapon, though some states have simpler misdemeanor classifications. For example, in Texas, standard criminal trespass (Class B misdemeanor) can mean up to 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, while trespassing with a deadly weapon or in a residence (Class A) brings up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine
He wasn’t prosecuted for trespassing. He was prosecuted for obstructing an official proceeding. In this case by participating in a riot. Instigating others in the riot by using his bullhorn to promote violence and conspiracy theories and he was one of the first to breach the capitol building and led others into the building.

1 year .. with a weapon. did you see him or anyone else with a weapon?
He was carrying a weapon. It was a six foot spear with a flag attached. There is actual video footage of him entering the building with the other rioters which you can see here.
By the way, he was only in prison from November 2021 to May 2023. He only served 16 of the 41 months he was convicted of.
But you would know this if you did some actual research instead of just listening to lies from the administration and conservative media.
You may not like it but the QAnon Shaman is guilty as hell.

he was charged with trespass. eventually he pled to obstructing an official proceeding.
Chansley was arrested and brought up on U.S. federal charges of "knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, and with violent entry and disorderly conduct on Capitol grounds"
a spear? so why didn't the capitol police giving him his guided tour take it away?
and note the CNN commentator called him a rioter. not an insurrectionist

no it isn't. one thing is clear, these people were fools to think this was going to help Trump in any way.
they caused one of the most polarizing events in modern US politics.
many believe it was an insurrection. many believe it was a riot. that fact alone proves it's not a cut and dried fact.
amusing. seems like you have the Carlson bug. and FOX. do you actually think Carlson was given all the video? it was provided to review at the capitol by McCarthy. Carlson doesn't have any copies. what he published was provided by the video office at the Capitol security office
when old Rupert canned him no more video on FOX. could Carlson revisit on his channel? yes and so can you or me.
here it is. Carlson DOES NOT HAVE ALL THE VIDEO. what he did air was released by McCarthy
WASHINGTON - Today, Rep. Barry Loudermilk (GA-11), Chairman of the Committee on House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight, announced that United States Capitol Police video footage from January 6, 2021 will be made available to the public through two methods, a new online viewing room and in person at the subcommittee’s offices in Washington, D.C.
Starting today, all video footage previously released to media outlets will be uploaded to an online viewing room for public access. This includes all videos released to Tucker Carlson and other media. Following the initial tranche of footage, the Subcommittee will continue to populate the viewing room with additional footage for public view.
“The goal of our investigation has been to provide the American people with transparency on what happened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 and this includes all official video from that day,” stated Loudermilk. “We will continue loading video footage as we conduct our investigation and continue to review footage. As I’ve said all along—the American people deserve transparency, accountability, and real answers supported by facts instead a predetermined political narrative."
Also, beginning Monday, November 20, the Subcommittee will allow any U.S. citizen to access USCP video footage of the Capitol from January 6, 2021 by scheduling an appointment to view the videos in person in the Subcommittee’s offices in Washington, D.C. To schedule an appointment, please email charep.oversightrequests@mail. house.gov. This is the first time the general public will be allowed to view—and request clips from— all USCP video footage from the USCP CCTV cameras at the Capitol from January 6, 2021.
the link is still up. go watch it yerself.
anything else you need to know? just let me and i'll help ya out.
thank you valued poster.
Tsk tsk. Still trying that pathetically anemic geriatric diversion still. A simple search of my post you quote will not yield "copy". *Access* was the word I used. So, stop running scared and lying about it.
I will credit you with expanding upon the January 6 by including mitch the dick. He, above your orange ferengi, is the one I blame most for everything going to shit. mitch succeeded in finding someone weak-minded enough to go ahead and sign off on everything he put on the idiots table. donny must have thought one of those forms made it legal for him to incite a coup. Just like the idiot mitch got, he found out that didn't happen.
Now get over your orgasm whenever foxy is mentioned. I ain't. I go for the real stiffy that OAN can give a real rightie wing nut, not that flaccid feeling foxy viewers.
And thank you for *FINALLY* fessing up to some real facts. It won't kill you to admit your wrong. I ain't holding my breath.

Since he was the only one outside of the committee to have "access" (not you lying using my post and saying copies) to the media made there, you can not prove it was just a walk in a field of daisys that day smelling the flowers. Thank you, lying poster.

That is only a subset of ALL the media that was recorded that day. You know ima asking for what the final tally of ALL the media is that day to show that violent insurrectionist actions far out weight the rubber necker ones.

It is sad that you have worked so hard to enable the Trump Admin in their attempt to "retell" these events.
It was an insurrection.
They forcefully entered the fucking Capitol and tried to stop the legitimate transfer of power.
I think waco would have better luck in saying this is what happens when you try and stop a hootenany.

... You left out the FACT that Chansley "onley served"
16 months BECAUSE THE VIDEO OF HIM INSIDE THE CAPITOL
WAS RELEASED - as I mentioned already.
And the Judge couldn't release him fast enough! ..
... YOU may not like it - but the Shaman was LIED ABOUT
by the Prosecution and the J6 Committee - and of course
was INNOCENT as hell...

Yeah, That was a decorative spear.
The American, French and Bolshevik Revolutions were insurrections. So was the overthrow of the Shah. January 6 wasn't. It was a comedy of the absurd. It takes a special kind of idiot to think he and an unarmed crowd are going to walk into the Capitol building and install someone as president.
I will credit you with expanding upon the January 6 by including mitch the dick. Huh? McConnell criticized Trump for January 6 as much as anyone. What I get when I Google that,
Yes, Mitch McConnell strongly criticized Donald Trump for his role in the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, explicitly stating that Trump was "practically and morally responsible" for the insurrection.
Public Rebuke: Following the Senate's vote to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial in February 2021, McConnell gave a blistering speech on the Senate floor, calling the events a "disgraceful dereliction of duty" by the former president.
"Provoked" by Lies: On January 19, 2021, shortly after the attack, McConnell said on the Senate floor that the mob was "fed lies" and "provoked by the president and other powerful people".
Private Disdain: According to a 2024 book, The Price of Power, McConnell privately blasted Trump as "despicable," "stupid," and a "narcissist" in the aftermath of the election, and he wept while thanking his staff for surviving the attack.
2025 Action: In early 2025, after stepping down from leadership, McConnell again criticized Trump for promising to pardon convicted January 6 rioters, calling such actions a "mistake".

impressive. your ability to deny being proven wrong is quite impressive.
and the word you used was "gave" to Carlson. yes?
Mitch who? McConnell? Mitch didn't want Trump to run in 2016. or 2024. Mitch had zero to do with Trump running for president and secretly loathes him. blame Mitch for whatever you want but don't blame him for Trump becoming president
it's amusing you getting all worked up about subsets of media maybe like you think Carlson has the entire sum total on his office shelf? like a compete set of Game of Thrones? you know he doesn't yet you think he does and he's intentionally covering up the insurrection that wasn't?
why does Carlson rile you up so much? it's not like you ever watched his show so what is it about him? that he was on FOX? what exactly?

Oh, mitch and alot of other repubs critized the slug dictator, many as it was happening. How many did a 180 afterwards? Maggies just don't have the stomach to stand on the right side of the law.
And it was because of him that started the crumble of equal branches of government.

Access. Gave. Examine.
You said foxy.
You can't show where foxy was given access and than gave it to your blowhard tuck.
I said tuckpad squarely.
But the is moot since you admit that not all materials are released. Hence you can't prove that it was a great "love fest".
If i might borrow a line, thank you valued poster.
Exactly what point re you trying to make here, TWK?
You’re denying all evidence,
You’re lost
what's your point here? are you gonna open a Jan 6th anniversary thread every year now so you can pontificate about the insurrection that wasn't?

Mitch McConnell is the downfall of Government? of Democracy? the destroyer of America?
BAHHAAAA
what's next? Mitch caused Jan 6th by installing Trump as his vassal puppet to ruin America? this was evil Mitch's plan??
amusing. just try to prove that.
your obsession with Carlson is bizarre. isn't it clear why McCarthy gave Carlson access? the most popular conservative host on the most popular cable network, FOX?
it should be clear that the Jan 6th committee was a farce and McCarthy was smart to disavow the token rino assholes Cheney and Kinzinger then after their televised false bullshit give the evidence to expose it to Carlson and FOX.
i mean, who would McCarthy give this access to so the truth could be seen on Jan 6th and the committee's bogus theater kangaroo show? Rachel Maddow?
I find it highly disturbing that so many people are willing to disregard the evidence of an insurrection merely because they were so bad at it.
The truth of the matter is that the Trump, assisted by many, pushed a false narrative of a stolen election through the use of “fixed” voting machines.
His claims, amplified by the FOX network, convinced republicans every where to not just show up at the Capital on January 6th but to activate the electoral machinery in many states to provide a slate of alternate electors whom he was going to use to overturn the results of a free and fair election.
All this culminated with a riot at the capitol building with the clear intention of stopping the process of confirming the results of the election and installing Biden as President.
Just because the attempt failed doesn’t mean that the rioters on January 6th weren’t engaging in an insurrection. It certainly doesn’t mean that Trump isn’t guilty of being the instigator of the crime.
