Your best bet would be to look for providers that are verified, post here and have positive reviews. Unfortunately they aren’t allowed to advertise, but if you see any posting, it’s a fair bet they are active. As for STG, sometimes you can see reviews of those providers here as well - that should help weed out those that are legit from the scammers. If you decide to take a chance on an unreviewed STG, keep your safety as #1 priority, and I would strongly recommend avoiding those that require a deposit. Also remember that LE often runs sting operations on places like STG and others. No guarantee that they might try that here as well, so again, it is best to stick with well known and positively reviewed providers.
