Homo Sapien has adapted to every environment on Earth. And we evolve to adapt to each one. Space is no different. With all the decades that have passed since Man has escaped our gravity well, we have learned from it. So, we have a bit of knowledge on how to proceed.
And the way we have treated this planet, we're chomping at the bit to trash another one.

the only notion that astronauts come back with is that we better be nice to Earth, as she is our only hope. none of them talk about space mining and colonies because they realize it will never work. William Shatner described it as looking into the face of death, even on a short hop space trip.
realistically, what are we trying to accomplish? prepare Mars for habitation after we wreck planet Earth? good luck with that..

It did bring back memories watching the minutes before re-entry to just after splash down. Reminded me that we can actually do something. And on the time table given.
I tell you, the pictures they took of Earth sure has shown how we have abused the Planet as compared to the first one taken by Apollo.
