Default Baseball Season Is Here: Question of the Day: Was Derek Jeter Overrated?

I maintain he would have never had the career he had if he was drafted by the Pirates, Marlins, Rockies or As!
His entire career he was surrounded by teams of luxury-tax free agents!
(The best that $$$ could buy!)
If he was drafted by a 100-loss team like the Pirates, Marlins, Rockies or As ... his career would have taken an entirely different trajectory!

... Hmmmm. ... Hmmm.... Reckon that's all food fer thought, mate.
But the heavy lot of blokes are lucky like that.

... Jeter's Yankee sides surely did WIN a 'andful of Championships.
... Rather difficult for me to claim that He's over-rated.

Certainly being in New York with the Yankees helped Jeter immensely. If you want to compare it to a potential superstar getting drafted by a 100 loss team, we could look at Paul Skenes in Pittsburgh. A Cy Young with a 10-10 record but an ERA of 1.97. The classic getting no offensive support from your team.I'm a Mets fan, but Skenes got no help from his center fielder (cost him at least 4 runs) on opening day.

I don’t know if he was overrated, but when I think of the players on those team I’d least want to face, he wasn’t one of them.

Derek Jeter was a very good baseball player. I will admit that his hitting stats may not get you into the HOF as an outfielder or corner infielder. To put up those kinds of stats as a short stop or second baseman you are going to get in. He did not hit 400 plus home runs, but he did everything else well. He could hit for average, steal a base, score from second on a single, hit 20 home runs a year.

He had very good career statistics for a short stop. Yes, he played with other talented players. The 2009 team that won a championship, there was like 8 batters with a 300 batting average in the everyday lineup. Jeter produced, he deserved to be elected into the HOF. I am a Los Angeles Dodger fan. I have respect for the Yankees. They were fun to watch play when Alex Rodriguez was on third base & Derek Jeter at short. I am surprised they only won one title together, the 2009 team. If Jeter were drafted by one of the teams you mentioned some of his cumulative hitting stats would not be as high like runs scored or RBI's. He still could have made the all star team like 10 times.

ow many HOF SS have the dubious distinction of NOT being the best defensive SS of his generation (Omar Vizquel's defensive skills were far superior)!
Derek Jeter had limited range!
He couldn't make a play deep in the hole and steal a hit (like Omar)!
He couldn't get to balls hit up the middle!
(He made the routine plays when balls were hit at him!)
And furthermore, how many HOF SSs can say they were NOT the best offensive SS of his generation!
(Nomar, ARod and Miquel Tejada ...put up bigger #s!)
I maintain: If DJ was drafted by the budget-conscious Marlins, Pirates, Rockies or A's ... the back of his baseball card... would look much different!

In a 2005 Sports Illustrated poll ... Derek Jeter was voted the most over rated player in MLB (by his peers)!
(There's NWIH if DJ was drafted by the Marlins, Pirates, Rockies or A's ...he would have gotten national tv exposure and won the World Series 4 times in his first 5 years!)
