There is no evidence that Iran currently has, or has ever had, an actual nuclear weapon. However, after Trump withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018, Iran immediately restarted enrichment activities, and at the start of this war had (and still has) approximately 440 kg of uranium enriched to 60%. The U.N. estimates that this is enough for 10 nuclear bombs if enriched further to 90%. From 2015 to 2018, when the JCPOA was in effect, Iran was limited to 202 kg of uranium enriched to 3.67%.
So the sole reason Iran is as close as it is to any nuclear capability is Trump's withdrawal from the JCPOA. Now, the administration is saying that return to the status quo ante would be a "victory." But in truth, Iran is demanding more - a reduction in sanctions, reparations and freeing up of cash, and they will hardly agree to get rid of the highly enriched uranium (HEU) that they've built up over the past eight years without some further concession by the US/Israel.
I've never understood why Trump's supporters think success means fixing (if it can even be called that) a problem of his own making.
How long until Trump starts calling this the "ninth" war he has ended and adds it to the list of specious reasons he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize?
