These polls take a scientifically selected sample of either registered or likely voters from areas around the country, usually with a sample size of around 1000 participants. There are demographic questions asked at first for age, gender, income and then the political demographics, including "are you registered to vote", "how likely are you to vote in the next election" and "are you registered as a Republican, Democrat or Independent" in order to ensure that the sample selects an appropriate representation of the party affiliation. The polls are conducted by phone over a two or three day period. Before the No-Call list was put in place, I was contacted for two such polls for the 1996 and 1998 election cycles.
