Default Good news for Frackers!

President Obama during SOTUA announced a new initiative on Fracking:

"In his State of the Union address Tuesday night, Obama spoke optimistically about the bounty of unconventional natural gas under the eastern United States. “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years,” Obama said, “and my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy.”

He is starting to say a lot of things that he would not have said earlier in his term. After all, he is starting to campaign now for re-election.

The sad thing is that he is typical of ALL politicians (regardless of political party affiliation) when they are campaigning ... tell the people what they want to hear then once you are in office do what the hell you want.

I'm ready to frack with Nikki too, but first, a word about the natural gas fracking.

Sure they are helping the local economy here. They created jobs and paid land owners money to drill.

They also poluted many water wells and destroyed roads and property.

Yes, we as a country are usually over regulated, but in this case the states need to step up and set some rules. In Ohio, it was found that earthquakes were caused from injecting waste water into the ground.

Now, back to thinking about Nilki

I don't know enough about fracking to have an opinion; however, I sure don't want to drink toxic water or water that bubbles...unless it's a carbonated drink!

I'll help you Nikki, basically how it works is deep beneath the surface, there are pockets of natural gas between layers of shale.

In order to release that gas, a company will drill down to those pockets and pump a mixture of water, sand and chemicals at very, very high pressure to break up that shale(rock) to release the gas to the surface where it is then collected.

This "fracking" process has been around for a while and was actually developed by the government(Dept of Energy) to assist corporations to access these pockets of gas in the 70's.

The concerns over this process are many and they include groundwater contamination, radioactive contamination and disruption of the bedrock below that some geologists say have already caused earthquakes.

What doesn't help is that these companies will not release the chemical composition of the fluids they are injecting below and many say it's because they are toxic

You know that here in S.A. and surrounding areas, is an aquifer that contains our drinking water called the Edwards Aquifer. The Edwards Aquifer is our only source of drinking water and it is incredibly sensitive to contamination.

President Obama is supportive of this process under strict regulation and what exactly that is we don't know. I'm not supportive of fracking in our area but maybe in others it is less risky. I understand that we will be using this process here and I hope that we don't regret it.

Sincerely,
