I second Los Barrios. I also take visitors to La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Not necessarily Tex-Mex, but visitors really like the ambiance and variety.

Panchitos (McCullough) or Los Barrios...about as Tex Mex as you can get (got the El Paso influence-nice thick tortillas).

My top choices: (All mentioned above and different locations within the city)

- Los Barrios (great tasting, very genuine)
- Alamo Cafe (best tortillas, quality service)
- Mi Tierra (most authentic)
- La Fogata (touristy and pricey but good quality)
- Panchitos (Does have live entertainment on weekends too, great quality in a neighborhood restaurant)

I'll offer up my two cents since I've been to most in town.

1. Picante Grill (Broadway across from the Witte Museum)
2. Don Pedros (SE Military near I-35)
3. Tomatillos (Broadway across from half price books and Breckinridge Park)
4. Jacala (West Ave near Fred rd)
5. La Fogata (Vance Jackson)

Most of these are landmark restaurants having been in SA for many many year. Picante Grill has only been around for about 10 years but they have already won numerous awards (best enchiladas, best margaritas, etc).

Enjoy!

I second Pieguy's vote about El Jarro, if what you want is to dine out at a nice place with good food. But if you want a 'joint' (no, not THAT kind) then Taco Taco on Hildebrand has gotten national attention. Be warned, lines are often out the door, it's noisy, and it's cramped. But the tortillas melt in your mouth and the carne guisada is heaven.

For a unique San Antonio experience without going to the riverwalk, try Rosario's in Southtown on S. Alamo, which is the King William district. Here's their web site: www.rosariossa.com
I suggest the original Blanco Cafe at, 1720 Blanco, for breakfast the next morning, or Teka Molino on San Pedro just south of North Star. Like the Taco House further down San Pedro, I like the affordable neighborhood joints that have been around forever.

There are a number of good suggestions here but the one I like best is Pericos on Bandera. http://pericosgrill.com/ I've been there a bunch of times and never been disappointed!

OK, now I've gotta put in my vote. I've always enjoyed El Mirador, just south of Durango on St. Mary's. Tex-Mex and interior Mexican done well. Not a lot of ambience.

I have to put in another vote for Martha's. Great tex-mex, love their salsa. Haven't had anything there I didn't like and they're fairly inexpensive.

On Northeast side: Salsalito's on Nacogdoches (Ambiance and great food) and Los Generales on Nacogdoches and 1604. (Great food...better prices.)
