Sometimes people need a salesman to walk them through the process. The auto sales manager realizes with ME, he can close my deal with no fuss and get on to the next deal. I just refuse to pay someone who provides ME no value add. In fact, most car salesmen are a significant negative because they get pushy and won't leave me alone. They chose to be in that business, not me. (I view cold callers on the phone the same way.)
Now a waitress is a different story. Assuming that she is pleasant and brings the right stuff on time, I always tip 20% or more. When I'm the designated driver, I tip a buck for EACH glass of water. (Some of you have been out with me and have seen me do it.) It's not fair to get service without tipping.
If a salesman has something to offer me that helps me, then I gladly pay them. It's the salesmen who think they are owed a living, and view customers as "the next moron to rip off" that earn the title "slimy", not the ones who are out there actually providing service and earning their commissions.
