Lucas, most large counties have full time public defenders. (LL enlightened me that Harris Co does not! Usually you only see that in rural counties.) Public defenders are looked down upon by ace Crim Def Attys. A top dog crim defense atty can bill a million a year doing white collar criminal defense, whereas a public defender would be really lucky to break 6 figures, maybe if he is the lead public defender in a large jurisdiction such as New York City. I meant no disrespect btw.

I always look for a Martindale Hubble rating of AV when I make atty recs for friends and family. Without that, it's a crapshoot. If he's AV rated, he's a badass. If not, he's a question mark.
You probably have to explain to him about "Martindale"!

Shakespeare didn't like lawyers either, you know.

^^If he deals with a lot of attys, he probably already knows about it. There are a lot of people full of shit on this board, but tbh, I never put Lucas in that category, nor you. I think ya'll just had a miscommunication that got blown out of proportion, as can happen on these boards. lol

My last post in this thread, (maybe.) They are doing the same job. Period. Do you think every criminal can afford an attorney? Of course not. Obviously Roger Clements can afford Rusty Hardin. But the average Joe in Houston can't afford him or anyone else if they are hit with a serious charge. Hence, the public defenders who have too many cases and are overworked. But at least you have an attorney, the attorney just doesn't really have time for you. No hot shots are PD's is my point. Forget about LL's silly old pathetic ass trying to make something out of nothing to start an argument.

^^ I don't disagree with a single thing you said. Rusty Hardin probably brings in 10 mil a year, easily. You aint ever gonna see him moonlighting as a P.D. lol.

The Bard was a pretty smart dude, so his opinion carries some weight.

Lawyers suck, til you need one. Then a badass atty is worth his weight in gold imo..

Correction: "I didn't say Harris Co. does not have full time "public defenders" .... I said a "public defenders" office like the Feds do. Harris has "full time" court appointed lawyers who are assigned to specific courts, and I have yet to see one who doesn't have a lot of gray hair on their head ... Harris has a "process" of screening them after they apply and there is a panel consisting of trial judges who review their history and qualifications to assure they don't have "ineffective assistance of counsel" issues ... and they make sure the attorney selected is qualified from experience and integrity to handle the cases assigned to them.

I wouldn't want to get personal with names, etc., but I doubt many of the "ace Crim Def Attys" look down upon them, because the "ace Crim Def Attys" probably knew them as trial attorneys for defendants BEFORE they started as court appointed attorneys and also know what I just said about the screening and selection process.

The Federal Public Defenders Office is a quality Law Firm! Collectively they generally have more trial experience than the Assistant U.S. Attorneys against whom they try cases, and they are extremely helpful and professional in assisting attorneys who defend Federal cases as private attorneys.

There are counties historically who have appointed "new attorneys" to handle cases, but there are some well known lawyers to volunteer (and some are appointed) to defend capital murder and other seriously complex cases around Texas and they make themselves available for less experienced attorneys for help.

The SCOTUS and Texas Court of Criminal Appeals have hammered enough on the dictates of the 6th amendment as to effective counsel so it is a concern for not only judges but prosecutors who don't like to retry cases, because someone dropped the ball.

So some of the old wives tales about court appointed lawyers are "out dated." The others: even one of those "ace Crim Def Attys" couldn't win, which is why they don't take them! Unlike Sunday afternoon pro-football.

^^If I'm charged in state court with a felony, and I have a choice between an AV rated criminal defense attorney whom I researched and hired, and a public defender, are you seriously proposing I should think long and hard about my decision? If that is what you are saying, then Lucas is right, you have no idea what you're talking about. If not, please clarify.

If you are addressing me, no that's not what I'm saying. Lucas's bullshit about "public defenders" and court appointed attorneys is the stereotypical point of view. (He apparently does that frequently ... now in the category of SissyLips)

Like I said: I'm not interested in "name dropping" and hesitate to do so to avoid someone's name being a "hit" on a hooker board, when they might not want the "notoriety"!

I have "concerns" about the "public defender" process in Harris County, but it's not quality. And just like providers ... more $$$ does not always mean better "service" or better "results"!

I recall this conversation and comment:

"I could have lost the case for 1/3 of that fee"!

Oh, I do "know" what I'm talking about.

^^2 thumbs up LL.

Btw federal prosecutors are badder asses than state prosecutors, generally speaking, and federal public defenders are badder asses than state public defenders, generally speaking.

The poor general public has no clue who are the real bad ass attorneys and who are the clowns. Jim Adler is a clown. Everyone in the legal community knows that, but not too many people among the general public know that, unfortunately.
