Melatonin
It's a natural substance your body produces to tell itself to go to sleep. Sometimes your body stops making enough of it. You can get it in supplement form. Pretty cheap too. Doesn't make you drowsy when you wake up. Isn't addictive. Take it 15 to 20 minutes before you want to go to sleep and it just helps you drift off. I use it all the time when traveling. I find it hard to sleep in hotels.
But yeah, the dreams are WEIRD!

Better yet, read a book, or attend a class, on the subject of C3ISR (Command, Control, Communication, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance). If it would put me to sleep teaching it, it will put you out listening or reading about it in record time.

You body is to used to being in bed.
Need to go for a walk about two hours before you want to go to bed,
the walk should be 30 to 45 minutes. Than after take that nice warm bath.
Followed with a nice glass of wine.
Nite nite...

I generally find it easier to find something else to think about, shift from the negative thinking to a positive thinking. Thinking about how to stop thinking is in itself... thinking! Try turning on 97.3 FM on the radio or download the K-Love app to your phone. When I have shit on my mind or if something is pissing me off, it's good to have positive and encouraging friends to turn to, but at 5am or at times you turn and no one's there and you just want to scream, the music may be an option to consider. It's a great temporary fill in for when you don't know what to do, or if you want/need something to lift you up in the now, or if you see yourself slipping and want to keep yourself out of the rut. Your thinking will continue, but hopefully the thoughts will shift from the downward spiral to world peace.

A good one of the things I mentioned:
Heat up 100% chamomile tea and let 1 melatonin dissolve in it...drink and enjoy your sleep.

Some Xanax to take away the anxiety followed by a couple of shots of tequila always treats me well when life turns to shit.

Exercise and eating properly are great stress reducers. I know when I get stressed out I tend to eat like crap. Next thing you know, I'm going to bed at weird hours and always tired. I'm sure some of the sleep medications help, but I tend to be wary of solutions that require medicated assistance.
I'm not a medical professional or a nutritionist, this is just based on my own observations.
