Gemma,

By no means was I saying don't do it. If you have your heart set on doing it then as BCD said go for it. I think people who have not done it see thousands of people in TS on New Years Eve and say "I want to do that" then they get there at 7-11pm and cannot get with 1/2 mile of the place. If you do decide to go I hope you have a blast & dress warm.

They pen you in, with the earliest people filling the closest pens first. If you leave you lose your place. No food, no drinks, no bathrooms. We stopped drinking liquids after morning coffee so we could get through to midnight. We got there at 4:00 and stood in our "pen" until midnight. At 12:05 the streets were empty as everyone heads for the nearest bar. We stayed near time square (Crown Plaza), and paid somewhere around $250.

I wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I can say I did it once. The most fun was the days following new years eve, just taking in the sites.

Sounds like torture to me. You couldn't pay me enough.

Gemma, I was in NYC last New Years Eve. I didn't go to Times Square though. Everything that Skippy and Love 2 say, is true. It's a mess there. It'll cost you a pile of money for a lot of restrictions.

I stayed in Williamsburg/Brooklyn and had the best time ever. I got to party like it was 1999 I love NYC

Besides NYC, what are the options? New Orleans? Miami? What do you guys recommend?

Don't listen to all of those above me that say they would not go to Time Square NYE.

I am from NY and ran a restaurant underneath Madison Square Garden for several years.
There is nothing like NY city on NYE !
Yes, it will be expensive. If you see other sites that are there like window shopping on 5th avenue, Statue of Liberty, Central Park, all the ethnic foods the trip is a great experience.

The positive energy in Times Square on NYE is amazing. Go with a girl friend, and make it a business trip.
If you go to clubs and like to dance it would be a really fun trip.

What about Chicago? There's always something going on at the Navy Pier.

too late for you to get a hotel this year. I travel to NY quite often. You should go. I did not want to go my first time (small town midwest guy), but I fell in love with the city. Love to just take off walking.

Anywhere from the financial district to 58th street is cool. When I go and want to save money, I stay at the Edison Hotel. It is 1 block off Times Square. It is an old hotel with small rooms, but it is clean. Lots of Europeans stay there
PM me if you do plan a trip, I can turn you on to some restaurants that only the locals know about.

Now if you do go, there are several ways to save money on sleeping accommodations.
LOL!
No seriously, if you do not include working to offset your expenses, there are Adult Hostels which are like the worldwide network for youths to use when traveling internationally.
Second there is something called Flip Key where people rent out rooms in their apartment or house. Both are about half the price of a hotel. There are other vehicles to use for sleeping accommodations that also save dollars.

Any suggestions for a Midwest gal wanting to visit the Big Apple for one of the most exciting holidays of the year??

THIS LINK seems pretty helpful, unless somebody knows of a better one for me to visit....

That's where they filmed "Harry met Sally" Meg Ryan does the fake orgasm scene for Billy Crystal. Afterwards, the extra in the scene says, "I'll have what she is having". That was filmed in Katz Deli.
Does anybody know who that lady was that said that famous line?
