New Years Eve
Who has been to New York to watch the ball drop on New Years Eve? Im thinking about doing something different this year and I've NEVER been to New York.
Any suggestions for a Midwest gal wanting to visit the Big Apple for one of the most exciting holidays of the year??
THIS LINK seems pretty helpful, unless somebody knows of a better one for me to visit....

I've been. If you go book your hotel well in advance! I had to rent a car to sleep in.

Pro's
1) You get to say you were in time square for NYE.
Con's
1) Will pay $400-$700 per night for a room if not more that's if you can even get one.
2) Flights probably $400-plus...jack up prices around the holidays
3) They pen in all of Time Square into sections sort of like human cattle, no booze allowed, and if you get caught they will give you a ticket that night. There's no where to use the bathroom, drunks & tourists everywhere and pack people in like a can of sardines.
4) Could be freezing cold.
5) Bars are packed and also super pricey. May charge you a flat fee of $100+ just to walk in the door...
Bottom line is if you want to drop a ton of money to say you were at TS on NYE go for it but I think there are much better options that are less expensive.

Was there a few years ago and even was picked to go on a stage for some music acts. A once in a lifetime. If you go get there early as people camp out all day just to be close to the ball. When they took us off the stage we were on they escorted us to the front of the crowd. Awesome time!!!

Despite the big drawbacks to something like NYE in New York, there is something to be said for experiencing such an iconic event first hand.
I've been in Sydney Australia for NYE and there were similar drawbacks. Very expensive, drinking was difficult, way too many a-holes etc etc. But I wouldn't ever take that experience back.
If you go in knowing the negatives, you can't be surprised and have the fantasy of what that night would be like ruined. Take it for what it is, go in with a realistic outlook and go have fun!
Good on you for wanting to do something exciting! More people should just go for it and not let the negative drawbacks be an excuse for not living life.

Gemma I can get a big apple and find a ball and drop it for you lol... I always wanted to do that when I was younger.. I don't like being around drunks or pushed and shoved so I don't think I would do it now... I think if you can get any type of special package where you have tickets to some of the live entertainment and can be up close it would be fun. Just don't go alone.. If you do go lets us know how it was!

As you get older, you just don't want to deal with crowds like that. Give me a bottle of Mad Dog and reruns of "The Golden Girls"!

Skippy has it right!
They pen you in, with the earliest people filling the closest pens first. If you leave you lose your place. No food, no drinks, no bathrooms. We stopped drinking liquids after morning coffee so we could get through to midnight. We got there at 4:00 and stood in our "pen" until midnight. At 12:05 the streets were empty as everyone heads for the nearest bar. We stayed near time square (Crown Plaza), and paid somewhere around $250.
I wouldn't do it again, but I'm glad I can say I did it once. The most fun was the days following new years eve, just taking in the sites.
