There was no upside to Trump turning over recordings. Are you saying he is fundamentally honest, and would have given them up when there was no benefit?

Neither you, nor I, have any way of knowing whether Trump had/has recordings. If I were in Trump's shoes, I would have recorded my conversations with Comey. Trump knew he was a leftwing plant from the beginning, and couldn't be trusted.

Given that Comey cleared Trump, Trump had no reason to volunteer anything that could muddy the water.

Trump either has them ( recording's not a tape or a CD or reel to reel) or not. If he does not have them then (as he say's now) he looks bad for making the implication he did. Even though he carefully worded it, he at best looks like a used car salesman.
If he does have them, he now would look like a liar if he produced them. If he had someone else come up with them and denied knowing they existed he would hit the jackpot, unless they were incriminating. If he wants Comey to think there is no recordings so he may get him to perjure himself, then he has actually been smart for once.
