Default Discounts v. Tips v. Rates

The following came from the "what if men were providing?" thread.

Grrr..I think women have way more tact and we are known to tip better...ask any waiter or bartender out there!

These two quotations raised some of the following questions:
  • Although the ladies' who have ads/websites that I see almost universally say, "tips are never expected but always appreciated" or some such language, the above quotations seem to indicate ladies, do, in fact, expect tips.
  • Although a lot of ladies are listed on P411, the vast majority do not offer a discount to P411 hobbyists.
  • Apparently, from the quotes above, the providers here feel that even when tips are given, they tend to be low.
  • If these ladies really believe they aren't being sufficiently tipped, why don't they raise their rates?
  • Or, why don't they offer a discount and hope the hobbyists tip the amount of the discount?

I agree with you Charles. In my opinion the word tip should never be used in an ad or website. In all my years of tending bar, expectations of a tip were never mentioned. In what ever profession it is tips shouldn't be mentioned.

Women do generally tip more, not sure why, I always tip extra.

I do not ask for tips at all. Figured if he wanted he would, simple as that. Sure we could lower our rates, does not mean the gent will tip.

However Im only speaking for myself.

Im a very big tipper due to the fact ive been there & know how it feels to b given next to nothing while being paid next to nothing (long long ago)....and i give a p411 discount
I never expect a tip and i feel it would b rude to even mention expecting one
Its just pure joy when u do get one as to me its a sincere form of flattery IT MEANS YA REALLY REALLY LIKED IT!! mmmm

I tended bar for over 15 years. It was a very rare occasion that women tipped well. I liked having women sit at my bar though. They would attract men and that brought the better tips.

One thing I meant, but forgot, to put in my OP.

Those ladies who do offer discounts on P411, tend to discount either $10 or so, or around 10%. I'm not criticizing this discount as being low or anything b/c a lady has the absolute right to set her own rate structure. However, do you think a comparable tip is appropriate, or do you think it should be more?

For instance, tips in restaurants tend to be 15-20%, while hair salons are about 30%, while taxis are 10-20%.

A provider's tip, if any, should be in what range? Should it be the $10 discount? The 20% found in restaurants? What???

I never expect tips from my patrons. In fact - and I'm only speaking about cash tips - I've only been tipped once. A gentleman once gave me $200 after an extended evening together and I don't know, I was kinda put off by it. I usually receive gifts from my patrons, which often exceeds my fee, but never a cash tip. I prefer that a gentleman give me a book, chocolates or something small as a gesture of appreciation, rather than a tip.

BTW - did you know that TIP is an acronym for "to insure promptness"?

From Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip_%28gratuity%29. The only reason I know this is because I looked it up once. The point is that the etymology of the term is sketchy at best.

Quote:
There are common inaccurate claims[2] that "tip" (or "tips") is an acronym for a phrase such as "To Insure Prompt Service", "To Insure Proper Service", "To Improve Performance", "To Inspire Promptness" or "To Insure Promptness." These false backronyms contradict the verifiable etymology, as follows.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the word tip originated as a slang term, and its etymology is unclear. The term in the sense of "to give a gratuity" first appeared in the 18th century. It derived from an earlier sense of tip, meaning "to give; to hand, pass", which originated in the rogues' cant in the 17th century. This sense may have derived from the 16th-century tip meaning "to strike or hit smartly but lightly" (which may have derived from the Low German tippen, "to tap"), but this derivation is "very uncertain".[3]

Whew! I thought I was the only lady around that didn't receive tips. I think I have received two maybe three tips over the years.

I hardly ever get tipped, i stopped mentioning tips a while ago. ive noticed if you offer an odd amount theyre more likely to tip though. Guys are always going to try to save money, and i understand it. theyre more paying for convienence than anything. But im not one to haggle prices on my body. Ive already had to cut it down to what it is now. There is always a nice gentleman more than willing to pay my price or more for every gentleman whos trying to save a buck or two. Theyres cheap whores out there for you boys, no worries (:

Have given gifts but never a tip.

On the occasions where a lady has taken me out for dinner (both in this little world of ours and in the alternate world) I got the sense (it would have been gauche to look at the check) that the tip they left was on the high side.

I don't think I'm particularly cheap. I tip well in restaurants and probably below standard for my barber because I got into a habit years ago and just recently realized I needed to get with it and raise the tip.
Somehow, I equate tipping a provider with tipping my doctor or lawyer so I don't do it. After the fee reaches a certain level, I just feel a tip is extraneous.
