anyone watching Pacific on HBO.

Not what I expected. Guess I was wishing for something like "Band of Brothers". Checked my DDR, takes 8 minutes before it starts, then it ends before the hour. Getting about 50 minutes of show. Seems to be lacking much of a storyline. Just kinda rambling around with out a lot of explanation what is going on. The website has some interesting stuff, and I know the basic history they are trying to portray, but it just seems like it's missing something.

That being said, I will continue to watch the entire thing, and re-watch it when its complete.

I think the pacific battle have been harder to potray in the movies(thin red line) and Pacific, as compared to Saving Private Ryan and Band Brothers. Due to the fact the whole Island ware fare as compared to one landing in europe left alot of the media back then scuttled, I mean London was close, what was close to Guadacanal.

I'm with O'Mike so far. It's all right, but I'm not thrilled over it yet. Maybe I'm just a little let down because the same team set the bar so high with Band of Brothers. Part of it is I think they are trying to tell a few stories at once and things are getting a bit jumbled. With BoB, the single unit was the story so you could follow them from Airborne Training all the way through V-E. In the pacific, there appears to be at least 3 different story arc's they are going for, and because of that they jumped right into Guadacanal. Also, I do think the "urban" fighting of the European theatre makes for easier to follow TV. In BoB they moved from city to city and country to country, there were recognizable names and clear progress. In the pacific theatre, even if we recognize the name of the island, it's from one indistinguishable patch of dense jungle to the next indistinguishable patch of dense jungle.

Agreed. I will give it time (and watch the entire series run) but right now as I watch the characters (two episodes into it) I don't feel like I know any of them. Previews for the next episode seem like it is going to be more character development so maybe I will get more into it. But right now BoB seems much better.

One thing too, the battles are starting in 1942 for Pacific and BoB started the battles in 1944 and only had to do like a year of history. Granted Bob was about a company that did not see action until 1944.

I am curious how in 10 episodes if they will attempt to make it to fall 1945 in the Pacific, seems like they will leave out alot.

In general I like the action when it happens so thats why I like the series, I agree as far as story it may be episode 4 when we get it

I hope the first few episodes are the thread and that eventually it will weave into a succinct story. The episodes are cut for commercial television so the 8min intro and the 5 min end of show are "filled in". The cut backs to the doctor and the heart murmur are setting something up....reunion at a later date to show how 12 months a war can change a person...something like that...anyhow its nice to see Chesty Pullard finally get some publicity. He was the real deal.

Now that I fully agree with. Bout time Puller got some Screen time. I think I'd almost rather see the entire series focused on him and the 7th Marines instead of the entire 1 Marine division, just so we can get more character focus. Maybe we'll get luck and the next Spielberg/Hanks/Ambrose/HBO project will be Chesty from Inchon to Chosin in 10 parts.

Agreed Sudzny,

I read an article on Douglas MacArthur and he controlled the press in the Pacific, almost nothing went out unless he approved. Of course being an ego centric A hole he didn't want anyone to get any credit except good old Doug. He was almost as great as his ego...lol.
That's why Chesty got little publicity for either WW2 or Korea.....of course he didn't give a SH*T, I didn't learn about him until I was in Vietnam talking with some Marines who had served under him in Korea......the were some old farts....must have been 30-35 years old....LOL.

Ok a quick question for you Marines. (Sorry, us Army Airborne guys did not get a lot of Marine Corps history, LOL)

When did he get the nickname "Chesty"?? They call him that in the movie, but looking at his award citations, he got most of his medals and awards from that point forward. Not real sure his chest was filled with medals at that time, but thinking he got the nickname later, when it was full. I could see why Hanks/Spielberg would use the name to show who he was, just questioning the historical accuracy of the nickname at that time. This would seem to depart from the notable historical accuracy that Tom Hanks is known for (i.e. Apollo 12, BOB, etc.)

Look at all his medals. He was "Chesty" in the Pacific theater. He won a shit load of medals in China and South America before WWII. He was equally hated by the Army and Navy, Halsey once said: "He (Puller) is the most arrogant Fuck I have ever met, but we can't do without him." The rumor was that Puller got his name at a Inter Service Officer Club Ball just before WWII in Hawaii, most of the officers had very few medals and Puller had about 20, the jealous Army and Navy officers would refer to him as the "Chest full of medals guy."
Don't know if its true, but sounds about right.

I actually like the WWII in HD better. I like the way it is put together and narrated. Plus, the actual men that were in the war on there too really gets to me. The video is amazing. To see stuff that hasn't been seen before, it really puts this war in a bigger light.
