Pretty much sums it up. You handled it the right way. The immediate red flag was him saying that he does not use providers that he has seen as references. I don't see a good reason other than they probably have something bad to say about him. Even if he had some privacy issues, he could request they not reveal who he is, not that it matters since he will eventually meet you.
